Linking Diabetes and Kidney Disease

Linking Diabetes and Kidney Disease

Congratulations to Rakhi Khanna, D.O. on her successful presentation at Advocate Condell hospital’s Diabetes Fair.  Dr. Khanna, of NANI’s Gurnee and Lake County offices presented “The Science Behind Kidney Disease” to an audience of community members on November 7th.

The topic is an important one for anyone with Diabetes because this disease is one of the major causes and results of Chronic Kidney Disease.  According to the National Kidney Foundation, “about 30 percent of patients with Type 1 (juvenile onset) diabetes and 10 to 40 percent of those with Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes eventually will suffer from kidney failure.”

“It’s a scary statistic, but one that surprises most people,” says Dr. Khanna.  “There is a great need to educate people in our communities on the importance of preventing and controlling Diabetes.  The prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease is directly linked to Diabetes, which is increasing to epidemic levels in the U.S.”
